Central Vacuum Cleaners

Can central vacuum cleaners make vacuuming fun? It might not become fun but it can sure make it a whole lot easier. Wouldn’t it be nice not to have to drag a big vacuum from one room to another, unplugging and plugging it up as you go? What about trying to vacuum the stairs and having the vacuum hanging precariously on the edge of the step. Even if you’re not building a new house, you can still install a central vacuum cleaner.

With a central vacuum cleaner, instead of carrying the whole cleaner around, you just carry a lightweight hose with the cleaning attachment. In strategic locations around your house you have receptacles. When you plug the hose into the receptacle the unit turns on. All the dust and debris travels through the piping and into a large collection canister, most likely installed in your basement or garage. If you have a vent, the smaller debris is vented outside.

What’s so nice about central vacuum cleaners is that they are so much quieter. You can be cleaning a room and talking on the phone or watching TV without having to turn it up to its highest level. All the noise is where the container is – out of the way. There are even some containers that are super quiet.

You can have a variety of accessories, just like on a regular vacuum. If you get an electric beater brush for the floor you have to have an electrical outlet next to the vacuum receptacle and you need a different hose that comes with an electrical cord.

The smaller systems will be able to handle a 2,500 square foot house. The common hose length is 30 feet. When you determine the place for your receptacles, make sure you can reach all the cracks, crevices, ceilings and corners.

All central vacuum cleaner systems are pretty much the same. When shopping around for a system pay attention to price, service and warranty. That’s where you will see a difference when the time comes.
